by Desmond Jones 29 Dec 2010

Duncan McCrae was a Scottish Highlander. Like many Highlanders he migrated to Canade in the 1840s. He then became a "49er" moving to San Fransisco when gold was discovered in 1849. He then learned the skill of sluice mining.

He then moved to Victoria following gold being discovered there. He was at Beechworth and was approached to head a syndicate for sluice mining at Omeo. This syndicate included David Syme and from the money Syme made from this syndicate he bought the "Age" in Melbourne and became the famous publisher of that paper in the 19th Century building it up to the pre-eminent newspaper of the booming Melbourne.

Duncan married and initially did well. When his eldest daughter Elizabeth married Ned Johnson he became involved in Ned's bullocky business which Ned had taken on after the death of his father Sam (The convict) who had died in 1872 when Ned was 15. Duncan also had small farming interests.

In the 1890s their bullocks were shot up in a dispute with the of the Transport Union which was beginning around this time. They tried to recover their costs but lost the Court Case. Reference is made of his drinking in the Court documents which is not unusual for miners of the time as the water is most mining towns was highly dangerous and alcohol a much safer option. Duncan also lost most of his money in the Bank Crashes of the 1890s (he was probably semi literate at best like many of the population at the time). The family struggled for a number of years. Ned died in 1911 and Duncan in 1912.

Duncan is recognised as a leading pioneer of the Omeo district especially in the mining industry.
