- 18 Jan 1677 a court record names his wife as Margaret Hodge, relict of John Cooper, Surry VA.
The following abstracts were made from the upside-down pages insertedin the back part of Book II "Surry County, Virginia Records 1652-1684"by Eliza Timberlake Davis:
p. 124 (Page 5) Augustine Hunnicutt,, Jr., Wm. Seward, and William Freeman are bound to the Court for 4000 lbs. tob. Aug. Hunicutt to pay to the orphans of John Hodge, deceased, their part of their father's estate.
On 1st March 1680 the following was found on County Court Order record of Surry Co., VA.:
"having this day rec'd a credible information that Margaret the wife of Augustine Hunnicutt Jun'r doth most shamefully abuse the orphans ofJno. Hodge desesed. It is therefore ordered that Mr. Robert Ruffin Overseer of decesed's will doe place the said orphans with such (illegible) as to him thought meet."
On 4 October 1680 Augustine Hunnicutt put up bond of 40,000 pounds oftobacco as guradian of Elizabeth, orphan of John Cooper deaceased; a month later another 40,000 pounds as guardian of the orphans of John Hodge deceased. On the 6 Sept. 1680 little James Hodge was placed in the home of Nicholas Johnson, four months later he was placed in the homeof John Clarke. John and Mary Clarke are the couple that sold Bray his first acreage in Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co.
